Make Valentine's Yours!
By Kieran O'Brien
For
some it's their favorite time of year, for others it's like Black Friday to a retail worker. Valentine's Day,
is it a celebration of love or an assault on the senses? That is up to you! Take control and make the card companies'
favorite holiday your own.
Culture and Couture:
Embrace your love of music and art and engage your soul. Your school's Art, Music & Dance Departments are great resources
for performances or art shows at your school or in your community. To honor the enlightened evening, you and your artistically
inclined associates can don your finest frocks, and revel in the artistic aura.
- Games and Garlic: No Vampires
need apply! Get your friends together for a night of games and gamy breath: Taboo, Pictionary, Charades, or Trivial
Pursuit. If you're feeling especially creative, make a Jeopardy board and set up a team competition. Your guests'
ticket in is either a favorite game or something with enough garlic in it to bestow the dreaded donkey breath; garlic dill
pickles, garlic pizza, or chicken in garlic sauce. If it in anyway renders the partygoer un-kissable, it's on the menu.
- Seventh Grade Slumber Party: Get a box of those elementary school valentines and invite your favorite girls
over to "kick it old school" with a seventh grade slumber party. Three favorites are required: favorite pajamas,
favorite movie, and favorite chocolate. Assorted beauty products and gossip magazines are optional but highly recommended!
A great way to commemorate the night is with a soundtrack. Pick out your favorites from your legally begotten mp3s and burn
baby burn them to a CD for all your favorite ladies! To start the night out right, pour your guests this decadent chocolate
mocktail.
Chocolate Covered Cherry
2 tbsp Chocolate Syrup
8 oz of Cherry Soda
or Cherry Coke
dash of milk
- Celebrate your Sovereignty: Assert your Independence! Get
up when you want to get up (Class schedule allowing-cough!) Start the Day with one question. "What do
I want to do today?" Plan things you've wanted to do but have put off because no one else wanted to. Athletically
inclined? Start your day at the gym's rock wall or spend some quality time at the track. If you're a beauty buff,
nothing beats a massage and a manicure/pedicure for rejuvenating your spirit. A Well-read Woman? Curl up in the corner of
your favorite library or bookstore with the literature and libation of your choice. Dining Diva take a cooking class. Musical
Maven? Practice an instrument, buy some CDs or take in a local band. Whatever you do the choice is yours!
Celebrating
love is not exclusive to the whirlwind romance of cooing couples. The love one has for family, friends and most importantly
themselves is just as worthy of exaltation if not more so. Set February 14th as the day you celebrate love
in all it's incarnations.
